Scottburgh and the surrounding Umdoni area are agricultural first and foremost, and that means sugar. Cane has been the dominant crop here since the Byrne settlers, and it still covers most of the rural land around Umzinto and Scottburgh.

The cane is processed at the Illovo mill at Sezela, one of the larger mills in the country, taking in the order of two million tonnes of cane a season. Around it sits the whole supply chain that keeps a farming district moving — the growers, the co-ops and input suppliers, the packhouses and cold stores, and the light-commercial yards through Park Rynie and Pennington. Every one of them handles palletised stock, bagged product, drums and crates that need a forklift, not a bakkie.
